"(...) tengo veinticinco años, soy de Alemania y era voluntaria de la organización
no gubernamental ambientalista Fundación Montecito por once meses. En Alemania
estudié meteorología en la Universidad Hamburgo. Al fin de mi formación universitaria me decidí hacer un servicio voluntario. Los motivos por esta decisión eran polifacéticas. Entre otras cosas quería aprender español y conocer a una cultura extraña.
(...) En los primeros cinco meses trabajaba como profesora auxiliar en un colegio y una escuela primaria en Cuítiva y una escuela primaria en el Llano Alacón.
(...) Después los primeros cinco meses cambié mi trabajo y trabajaba los seis meses remanente con IDEAM. Yo sé que este trabajo solamente es posible porque estudié meterología, pero estoy agradecido para esta posibilidad.
(...) En general, trabajar con la Fundación Montecito es muy bueno, porque aquí siempre hay una persona de contacto. Para mi, esto es un punto muy importante. (...) Referente a propuestas de mejoramiento, una idea por mi parte sería la introducción de más trabajo es el campo. Pero no estoy segura si esto es posible."

"(...) this voluntary was for me like the perfect combination to start my travel time. Even though I did not have any experience in teaching classes and was only used to help children with their homework, I saw that as a good opportunity to actually try to sensitize children to that subject and at the same time improve my Spanish skills, which was really poor at that time.

My tasks were teaching English and environmental culture to the children of the 6, 7 and8 grades (11 to 14 years old). As the subject is really broad,it gives a wide range of possibilities and a lot of freedom to the volunteers to actually do whatever they want.

For me, even though it was a very short time experience, it has been a very rewarding one. Of course, I would lie if I would say that everything was perfectly coordinated all the timebut no major issues showed up during this month. The major uncertainties were mainly related to the schedule of the classes, mainly coming from a lack of communication with the other teachers (mainly due to the language barrier) and also the organization of a cleaning excursion to end up the class. However, teaching and exchanging with children about the environment and the culture differences between Colombia and Europa, as well as organizing an event with many different entitiesin a foreign language and countrywas a very enriching task.

In order to allow a better start of the school and not have the feeling to just be put into the cold water, it might be important to launch communications with the ex-volunteers and the new ones, or at leastbetween the volunteers that are working at the same time. Also sharing some of the teaching contents or ideas of activities could be a good option."

"I am anenvironmental educador in Germany,so I have some background withteaching enviornmental tpocis, also with water protection. So for me finding this voluntaryoportunity was one of the best to find.

The first meeting of Felipe and two othervoluntarias was very nice and informative (in general aboutthe project and Cuitiva). In the morning we went together to Cuitiva to meet the teachers of the school and shedule my timetable and as well to meet the major of Cuitiva and move into his Finca.

(...) Arriving at the school I got another surprise, as the teacher right away asked me to take over and kind of left (for the kitchen to take a coffe-break –as I foound out with the time she would always do that as she neighter could handle her class very good). So my first day I was only in thisone class, which turned out later to be the hardest class –but for the first day it was ok –Í had a lot of energy and motivation and the pupils were also much more interested on the first day.

(...) The project is not only about teaching at school but much more about living with the local people in Cuitiva.The people are really nice and interested,inviting me,asking me lots of questions.

(...) The schools have a lot of interest in classes in english, as even the teachers don ́t speak english, so the level ofenglish ofthe pupils isquite low. So the classes weremore spanglish than in english and in general much more basic than I expected.So my spanish really got so much better in these weeks teaching in the school, as the kids only speak so basic (or none), so I had to prepare everything in spanish as well."

Maren Weber [Germany]

Maren 'at home'

"Yo trabajé un mes en el Colegio de Cuítiva, un pueblo pequeño de 2 mil habitantes. Allí di clases de medio ambiente e inglés y durante este mes preparé juntos con los alumnos una obra de teatro. La obra trataba de cuidar el Lago de Tota y debía ensenar a los padres y todo el colegio que la protección del Lago tiene una importancia enorme.

Este trabajo fue una experiencia única para mí, encontré estudiantes tan curiosos por mí y con muchas ganas de aprender. Los profesores me integraron desde el primer día y siempre me apoyaron y ayudaron. Así no necesité mucho tiempo para acostumbrarme e hice buenos amigos.

Aparte del trabajo en el colegio, conocí a la vida de campo, porque vivía en la casa de alcalde de Cuítiva. Eso fue también una experiencia buena, encontré a gente tan amable y abierta que siempre me sentía integrada y aceptada.

Estoy muy triste que ya tuve que irme y nunca voy a olvidar a la gente que conocí y la experiencia que hice."

"So I returned to Germany after 11 months in Colombia. What shall I say? I guess it was the best year of my life. To work in Tota with the pupils and the teachers was an incredible experience. I think I can say easily that they own a big part of my heart now. I never will forget them and I hope that we can hold the contact. (...)

I’m really glad that I could make this connection to them. Especially the last 6 months in my school were… amazing. I can’t describe how happy I was in this time. The feeling that you were accepted by the students, by the teachers, yes even in the whole village, were incredible. (...)

I know this report is for showing my experience in this year but I want to thank here the English teachers for their support and their help in my first months.

Also I want to thank Felipe for his support and his ideas to make my classes better and more interesting for my students.

If someone asks if this year was worth it. I just can say: Yes! I would do it right now again!"

"Trabajar en EVAgua como voluntario fue una experiencia completamente nueva para mí. De vivir en una ciudad con más de 20 millones de habitantes me mudé a un municipio donde a duras penas hay 2 mil. Después de 15 años de ser estudiante en escuela privada pasé a ser docente en un colegio municipal. Haber vivido en Cuítiva el último mes y medio fue una experiencia, cuando menos, llena de contrastes. (...)
Ahora mi voluntariado llega a su fin, y me voy contento. Me voy con el temor que sentí al principio completamente superado. De hecho, ahora me parece ingenuo haberme sentido así. La misma forma de funcionar de este tipo de voluntariados hace gran parte del trabajo que el voluntario viene a hacer. Los niños quieren aprender de uno sin que uno se lo proponga. Es un encuentro inmensamente provechoso, y me siento afortunado de haberlo vivido.
Sin embargo, detrás del funcionamiento armonioso del proyecto, sí existe una labor que no se hace sola, ni mucho menos. En EVAgua se está haciendo un cambio, y no el tipo de cambio de poner un granito de arena y esperar a que se desencadene una milagrosa solución. No; en EVAgua se aspira a un cambio significativo y para conseguirlo hace falta el trabajo de muchos.
En definitiva, el mes y medio que viví en Cuítiva fue una experiencia nueva, llena de contrastes y muy enriquecedora."

"“¿A Colombia? ¿Estás loca?” (...)
Fácilmente, yo estaba muy contenta haciendo el proyecto en el Lago de Tota. No solo porque me encantaba pasar tiempo con Pedro, conversando y cada vez aprendido mucho, pero también porque me gustaban las actividades con los campesinos y los niños. (...)
Yo visité algunas veces el Lago de Tota y los sitios en su cuenca, descubrí los páramos lindantes y por la primera vez observé las grandes diferencias entre los pueblos y ciudades boyacenses. (...)
La verdad es que yo disfruté mucho trabajando con los estudiantes, cualquier día, cualquier hora. (...)
Por [todo] eso, yo puedo solo recomendar el proyecto en Tota, y la colaboración con Pedro y Felipe. Ambos son muy precisos con sus promesas y apuntas y uno no se aburre en su compañía. Y si falta organización de algunas actividades, es porque las otras partes involucradas no cumplen, olvidan o no quieren cumplir y quieren olvidar sus compromisos, como lo pasó algunas veces..." (...)
Yo descubrí [otra] <una> dificultad, que se reflecta en cada intención a mejorar el (medio) ambiente. En concreto, la falta de sentido de la complejidad, que resulta en un ciclo de controversias. Mientras se explica a los chicos el problema de la contaminación, se conducen los coches de un lado a otro, se pagan a los niños sus billetes de autobús, aunque pueden utilizar fácilmente sus bicicletas, o se cocina la carne tres veces al día sin pensar en la huella ambiental que ese consumo puede tener. (...)
Obviamente, el diálogo y la voluntad escuchar y compartir son las condiciones más cruciales por cualquier desarrollo, por cualquier paso adelante. Por eso también estoy segura que los proyectos como OBSA o Montecito pueden traer un futuro más brillante para las comunidades de Tota, de Duitama, de Boyacá, de Colombia. Porque allí se enseña, allí se aprende!

"[It] was a very special and memorable experience. Not only did I feel like I was supporting a great cause, I was also directly touching the lives of the younger generations. The future of the planet lies in their hands and they must be conscious of the present impacts regarding their very important resource, Lago de Tota. The Colombian children living in smaller towns around the lake are
eager and open minded to what I was presenting to them. They are
curious, shy, and very caring. [...] The opportunity to learn about Lago de Tota and the paramos was very special because these ecosystems are very unique and special to South America. Montecito also has an alliance with OBSA, a NGO working with
a high school in Duitama, which offered great opportunities to accompany the kids to visit the paramos. [...] This is a great experience to enhance your Spanish, experience a new culture, and contribute to helping the environment."
